So, I know the title sounds a little dramatic but for me it has been completely true. I have made a point to designate a room just for peace. I am one of those weird yogi nerds so for me, I meditate and do yoga. I really feel like this is a space that every mom should have. When kids get thrown into the picture they are so stinking cute and bring so much love, but there is a negative side. The seedy underbelly of motherhood shows it’s face in many ways, and changes through the years. Having 2 toddlers, my shame is the constant mess in my home 24/7. Luckily I have a room that is “off-limits” to the kids. This is a space that brings me peace and clarity; it is simple and clean, is filled with my favorite scent, and plants, and is a space I can be alone and focus on my day. I find the days I go into my Meditation Room I am a happier, kinder, more understanding mother and wife. I am able to meditate in the morning on my goals and repeat positive affirmations to myself. Through out my day I am reminded of my morning in my special room and that I have a reason to be doing everything I do. Even if you don’t have a specific room you can dedicate to your-self then try a corner in you bedroom, maybe its your bathtub, or a part of your family room. Just make sure it is a place where you can focus and be alone at sometime during the day.
Here are some main things to look for when creating your space:
1.NO KIDS ALLOWED
this is your space and is meant to be a place to focus on you and you alone. You serve your family all day long but this space is meant to serve you. Try not to even have your kids toys out or be visible. This is a space that represents you and can be a place to connect with yourself again. Believe me, I know how hard it can be to feel lost when you are elbow deep in laundry with diapers over flowing the bin, and you can’t remember when you showered last.
2. FILL WITH POSITIVITY
This can be done many different ways; I have a vinyl quote from Buddha on my wall, but it can really be anything. For example you can have a list of positive affirmations on your mirror, a pretty green plant that makes you smile (I actually think bringing nature inside to your space is a necessity), or paint the walls your favorite color
3. DECORATE YOUR DREAM
Only put things in this space that you love. Don’t put the creepy doll your great aunt Margie gave you because you have no where else to put it. This is a space that should scream everything about you! From the scent to the sounds, temperature, colors, and textures. For example my Meditation Room is in my basement that gets freezing! I hate being cold more than almost anything, so I have a personal heater in my room to get nice a toasty. I also burn Naj Champa incense, hang mandala tapestries, have pillows all along the floor, and play peaceful yoga/mediation music. It is my idea of a true oasis. Your oasis might be playing Metalica, I’m not one to judge, just make sure it is something you absolutely love
4. ENTER EVERYDAY
Make sure to not forget about your space. When it is new it may be hard to remember but add it into your regimen, just like brushing your teeth. Your persistence with spending time in your space will pay you back ten fold! Weather this is a room for meditation, yoga, crafting, applying make up, reading, writing, or vlogging, just make sure you are doing something you love everyday.
I’d love to hear about your experience with your new space! This room just may save your life!
Good luck and Namaste!
